Why Consistency Beats Perfection When Starting a Podcast (Or Anything Else)

So I moved a few months ago to a new apartment.

And you'd think after years of producing podcasts professionally, setting up my new home studio would be... easy?

Haha nope.

I think the lighting is weird. Like, weird shadows. My background is off. The whole vibe feels... off.

The audio? That's fine. (Thank god for that, at least.)

But every time I sit down to record, there's this little voice that goes: "This isn't right. You're a podcast producer. It should look perfect."

Here's the thing—I could wait.

I could spend weeks tweaking the lights, ordering new gear, rearranging my desk seventeen times until it finally feels professional.

But here's what I know after years in this industry: Consistency beats perfection. Every. Single. Time.

Why Your Audience Doesn't Care If Your Setup Is Perfect

The truth is, your audience doesn't care if your lighting is a little off or your setup isn't Instagram-worthy yet.

They care that you show up.

They care about the value you bring, the stories you share, and the connection you build—not whether your ring light is at the perfect angle.

And honestly? The podcasts that actually grow aren't the ones with the fanciest setups (aka stop comparing yourself to Diary of a CEO).

They're the ones that keep going. Week after week. Episode after episode. Even when it's not perfect.

So yeah, my studio setup is a work in progress. AND I'm recording anyway.

Because I'd rather have a slightly imperfect show that exists than a "perfect" one that never launches.

What Happens When You Wait for Perfect

Let me tell you what happens when you wait for everything to be perfect before you hit record:

Nothing happens.

Your podcast idea sits in your head. Your message doesn't reach the people who need to hear it. And your business misses out on the authority, visibility, and connection that podcasting can bring.

I've worked with countless entrepreneurs who waited months—sometimes years—to launch their podcast because they wanted everything to be just right.

And you know what? When they finally launched with an "imperfect" setup, their audience didn't notice the things they were worried about. They were just grateful for the content.

The Real Secret to Podcast Growth: Showing Up Consistently

Here's what I've learned from launching and managing dozens of podcasts:

The shows that succeed aren't the ones with the best equipment. They're the ones that show up consistently.

Because consistency:

  • Builds trust with your audience

  • Trains the algorithm to favor your content

  • Creates momentum that compounds over time

  • Develops your confidence and skills faster than planning ever could

  • Positions you as a thought leader in your niche

When you commit to showing up every week (or however often makes sense for your business), you're telling your audience: "I'm here. I'm reliable. You can count on me."

That's the foundation of authority. That's what turns listeners into clients.

Messy Action Beats Pristine Planning

You know what I tell my clients when they're worried their podcast won't be perfect?

Done is better than perfect.

Messy action beats pristine planning.

And the world needs to hear what you have to say, even if your lighting's a little wonky.

Because here's the truth: your first episode will probably be a little rough around the edges. Your tenth episode will be better. Your fiftieth episode? Way better.

But you can't get to episode fifty without recording episode one.

What You Can Do Instead of Waiting for Perfect

If you've been sitting on your podcast idea—or anything else—because it doesn't feel ready yet, here's what I want you to do:

Start Where You Are

You don't need the fanciest microphone or a professionally designed studio. Start with what you have. Your audience cares about your message, not your equipment.

Commit to a Schedule

Pick a realistic publishing schedule and stick to it. Once a week? Every other week? Monthly? Choose what works for your life and business, then show up consistently.

Focus on Value, Not Production

Your listeners don't need Hollywood-level production. They need valuable content that helps them solve a problem or feel less alone. That's what keeps them coming back.

Here's to Showing Up Anyway

So yeah. My home studio isn't perfect. The lighting's still weird. My background needs work.

But I'm recording anyway.

Because I know that showing up imperfectly is infinitely more valuable than waiting for a perfection that doesn't exist.

If you're ready to finally launch that podcast you've been thinking about—or if you're a DIY podcaster who's tired of doing it all yourself—let's talk.
